LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)
Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol
Dr. Matthew McRae Jr. will perform a series of steps during your gum surgery procedure in Athens, GA in order to remove bacteria and infected tissues. The procedure for gum surgery, or the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®), uses a laser specifically designed for gum disease treatment. We will explain the steps involved in this gum disease treatment so that you know what to expect the day of your procedure.
Prior to beginning LANAP®, Dr. McRae will measure the pockets between your teeth and gums. Using a small ruler with millimeter increments, we will be able to determine the depths of your periodontal pockets and the amount of attachment loss that has occurred.
In the next step of your gum disease treatment, Dr. McRae will use a pulsed laser light to remove bacteria and diseased tissue from within the pockets. This step kills the bacteria that causes gum disease. The laser light used during this gum surgery cannot be absorbed by water, leaving your healthy tissue, root surfaces, and bone unharmed.
Dr. McRae will then remove the calculus, or tartar, from the root surfaces of your teeth. He will do this using ultrasonic scalers designed to remove the calculus collected under your gum line. The laser denatures the calculus, making it easier for it to be removed with ultrasonic scalers.
The laser makes a second appearance in the next step of your gum disease treatment. Dr. McRae will use it to stimulate the soft tissue, root surfaces, and bone around the areas being treated. The blood in this area will become sticky and form a seal around the teeth. The seal keeps the treated areas clean and closed for healing.
In the final stages of LANAP® for gum surgery, Dr. McRae will compress the tissue against the exposed root surfaces of your teeth. The tissue will reattach without the need for stitches.
Finally, Dr. McRae will adjust your bite. This is an important final step, particularly for the teeth that have lessened bone density.
